Purpose of the Study (en Español):

The main purpose of the project is to identify the strategic needs for program and facilities; review capacity, productivity, reliability, and quality of service indicators and recommend changes that will improve service delivery. WMATA in cooperation with its jurisdictional partners reviews targeted bus lines to improve service efficiency as well as coverage. This involves examining the overall performance with the aim of improving service reliability, frequency, crowding, travel time, bus stop amenities and customer communications.

Lines Under Review:

Four lines were chosen for this study based on customer complaints and an assessment made by Metrobus Operations service planners. Click on the route numbers below for downloadable schedules of the routes.

Study Process:

The Service Evaluation Study has three main components:

  1. Reviewing current operations and traffic conditions
  2. Consulting with stakeholders
  3. Developing recommendations and implementation strategy
The first phase of the study is close to completion and the public outreach component will begin with a series of public meetings in late August/early September intended to capture the most pressing issues in the minds of the riders of each line. Later in the Fall of 2010, a second round of public meetings will give riders a chance to comment on the preliminary recommendations of the study team. The face-to-face public meetings will be augmented by comments delivered through other means, including a telephone comment line and the project website. In the final phase preliminary recommendations for improving the service delivery will be developed and presented for public comment in the second round of the public outreach meetings. After receiving additional feedback on these preliminary recommendations, the study team will finalize the recommendations and generate an implementation plan for each line. Metro hopes to have recommendations and an implementation strategy by end of the year. Reports generated in the course of this study will be made public early in 2011.

Upcoming Events:

Public participation is a significant part of forming the recommendations, so please bookmark this page and check back over the coming months for information on public meetings and other opportunities to get involved.
